As an employer, you must complete your employee’s W-2s by January 31st so they can file their taxes on time. Filing a bunch of W-2 forms can be challenging especially if you have more than 10 employees working for you. In this case, the best option to file W-2 is to do it through SSA’s Business Services Online.
If you have more than 250 W-2s in your hand, you must file electronically anyways. The W-2 Filing tool is completely free to use. You can register to the BSO and start filing W-2s for your employees. It is also such a great tool to verify your employee’s Social Security numbers and other information that they’ve provided to you on other forms like the I-9 and W-4.
How to use Social Security’s BSO?
First and foremost, you have to register so that you can verify your employer identity. The registration page is secure.ssa.gov./acu/IRESWeb/registration.jsp
Upon completing the first step of your registration, begin your phone registration. You can do this by clicking the “Complete Phone Registration” from the same link above. Use the User ID you’re given at the first step of the registration to BSO.
