Each year, employers report wages paid to their employees and total taxes withheld from them. The Form W-2 must be completed for each employee the company provides a salary, wage, compensation, or any other payment for that matter.
The form’s completion itself has nothing to do with the employees but the employee can request their Form W-2 to fulfill their tax duties. Employees should expect to receive their W-2 Form late January, right when the tax season starts. If you haven’t gotten your W-2 by then, you may want to contact your employer or the human resources department of the company.
Since the IRS requires employers to fully furnish the W-2 to the government and employees by January 31, if you don’t get it by then and your tax return results in a delay, there will be no repercussions on your side as the IRS will handle the situation on your behalf.
Federal W-2 Form – California
W-2 Wage and Tax Statement form is a federal form that is required by the federal government. So whether you live in California or any other state in the country, the form stays the same as well as the function and what it’s used for.
In addition to the employer and employee relationship, self-employed taxpayers are also subjected to file their own W-2 if they earned more than $600 in the previous year. So even though the IRS doesn’t require people to file taxes if they earned $1,000 or less, but if you’re self-employed or an independent contractor, you must report this income to the IRS. Otherwise, you may be subjected to penalties that would result in paying way more than a small percentage of what you’ve earned.
